Nicola Shirley – The Engine – Registered Financial Adviser (RPL LVL 5)

Nicola has a background steeped in finance, having spent many years in domestic banking both here and in the UK. Two years in merchant banking in London followed by five years as a corporate foreign exchange dealer, her last role being in ANZ Auckland treasury.

Raising a family of four sons and growing a business dictated her and her marketer husband Andrews next phase of life. The purchase of a business and relocation to Warkworth in 2000 began a time of much personal growth and many challenges, industry changes, expansion, diversification, and recession. As the GFC hit home Nicola took the helm of the business while Andrew returned to a corporate role. Successfully preparing the business for sale and a seemly industry exit post GFC was one of the hardest times but in hindsight a highlight.  Nicola had just launched a start-up – seeing a niche in what is now termed the virtual assistant market however finances dictated she return to banking and finance.

In 2008 she joined Wizard Home Loans then moving on to BNZ and Westpac as a lender.  She realised she is a people person- not a corporate face, so when the opportunity arose, she joined Finance Wise Ltd- as a partner in the boutique mortgage brokerage which is now based in Warkworth.  A Registered Financial Adviser (RPL LVL 5) she is now the sole adviser for the company. It is through this role that she began to help many small businesses. “I am a collaborative person and will pitch in to help people however I can, most small companies do not have  access to the full range of experience/skill sets required to optimally run a business so struggle to be  objective when looking at their own ”. She recognises that much as we all have our strengths which tends to be the area of the business where we focus our energy on- that it’s our weaker areas that get forgotten and that need bolstering. Being a great tradie alone does not guarantee a smooth transition to successfully being a business owner. She has found time and time again that a few suggested tweaks- discussed/implemented/measured and reviewed do in time greatly assist in outcomes.

It’s all about trust, mutual respect, checking in egos at the door, good two-way communication – no judgment! Her approach is simply sleeves up and heads down to work on better practises and a plan for solutions together.
My point of difference? “It’s a blessing and a curse but I genuinely care, I can’t help becoming personally invested- nothing makes me happier than being party to an awesome outcome for my clients be it a great lending offer or seeing them grow/succeed with me as their business adviser”.
Nicola is continuously contributing to her Community. It takes just a little help from everybody to make the school->town->country->world a better place.

Community roles held:

Kaipara Flats School board of trustees 2002-2007 Treasurer

Mahurangi Rugby Club- Committee- Approx 13 years 2005-2018 with final 3 years as Treasurer.

Kaipara Flats Play Group- Committee/executive 2000-2011

Kaipara Flats Community Heritage Society- Founding chairperson 2003 I have remained on the executive throughout- currently Treasurer. During this time I over saw the funding and purchase of a building for Community use (Play group etc). It was debt free within 2 years.

Mahurangi Kindergarten Treasurer- 2002-2005

BNI Kowhai Coast- 2019 to present. Treasurer


Outside of her advising roles Nicola loves paddle boarding, tennis, fishing, gardening and walks with her trusty dog Ted. Her winters generally revolve around managing her sons rugby teams and associated commitments with the odd ski weekend snuck in!
