Business Growth & Leadership Support NZ | RISE by The Engine

The Leaders Who Ask Better Questions

At The Engine, we work with business owners across New Zealand who want to strengthen leadership, improve strategy, grow sustainably and build businesses that are resilient for the future.

One common theme consistently stands out amongst the businesses that thrive.

Curiosity.

Not ego.

Not pretending to know everything.

Not having all the answers.

The strongest leaders are usually the most curious people in the room.

They ask questions.

They listen deeply.

They stay close to the problem.

And they are willing to admit there is always more to learn.

Recently I heard a speaker say something that stayed with me:

Part of becoming a strong problem solver is understanding which problems are yours to solve.

That resonated deeply because one of the greatest mistakes I see in business is leaders believing they need to appear as though they know everything. The reality is no one does. The businesses that evolve successfully are usually led by people willing to continuously learn, challenge assumptions and seek insight from those closest to the issue.

The businesses that stagnate often have something in common too.

They stop being curious.

They rely on old systems, old assumptions and outdated thinking. They surround themselves with people who reinforce what they already believe instead of people who challenge them to think differently.

The businesses that grow sustainably are different.

Those leaders ask:

What are we missing?

What are our customers trying to tell us?

Where are the inefficiencies?

What uncomfortable truth do we need to confront?

What opportunities are sitting in front of us that we are not seeing?

And most importantly, are we solving the right problems?

Curiosity is not weakness.

It is strategic intelligence.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. What does an advocacy consultant do?

A. An advocacy consultant helps individuals, organisations, charities and community groups navigate complex challenges, amplify their voice and create meaningful influence. This can include advocacy strategy, stakeholder engagement, campaign development, submissions, petitions, public awareness initiatives, media engagement and strategic communications. Effective advocacy is about turning important issues into conversations that drive action, awareness and positive change.

Q. Can Catherine help with petition campaigns?

A. Yes. Catherine has first-hand experience leading successful petition campaigns, including growing a national health petition to 17,096 signatures while receiving life-saving treatment herself. RISE can provide guidance on campaign strategy, messaging, community engagement, stakeholder management, media opportunities and maintaining momentum throughout the campaign journey. Every petition is different, but the objective is always to build awareness, engagement and impact around an important cause.

Q. Can Catherine help individuals?

A. Yes. While much of Catherine’s work involves organisations and communities, she is also passionate about helping individuals whose stories deserve to be heard.

While outcomes can never be guaranteed, Catherine understands the power of authentic storytelling and how lived experiences can inspire people to take action, offer support and create meaningful change.

Fuel Pressure is Real. Leadership Matters More.

Fuel Pressure is Real. Leadership Matters More.

Fuel Pressure is Real. Leadership Matters More.

The hidden cost of the Fuel Crisis (and what smart businesses are doing with our help.)

Knowledge is Power | Navigating Pressure with Perspective

Right now, more than ever, businesses are feeling the flow-on effects of rising fuel costs. But it’s not just showing up on balance sheets. It’s showing up in behaviour. In mindset. In decisions your people are making every single day. We’re seeing it play out in real time with hybrid teams. Employees are questioning their days in the office. Leaders are questioning productivity, culture, and connection. And somewhere in the middle… tension builds.

The Reality Check

One of the most powerful things we’ve done recently is simply sit down with teams and do the maths.

Not assumptions. Not emotion. Just facts.

In one case, the perceived “significant” increase in commuting costs equated to $7 per week.

Seven dollars.

But left unchecked, that perception was driving resistance to coming into the office — impacting collaboration, culture, and ultimately performance.

The Leadership Lesson

This is where grounded, external influence matters.

Because when you’re inside the business, these conversations can become emotional, political, or avoided altogether.

An outside lens brings:

  • Objectivity
  • Clarity
  • Commercial thinking
  • And the ability to reframe without bias

It’s not about dismissing concerns – it’s about right-sizing them and then solving them together.

Why Outside Influence Changes Everything

Why Outside Influence Changes Everything

Why Outside Influence Changes Everything

Can you afford to lose what you have built?

When your business starts slipping — it’s already further gone than you think

Why firefighting is costing you more than you can see.

Right now across New Zealand, we are seeing a very real shift in the business landscape.

It is not always loud.

It does not always show up immediately in the numbers.

But it is there.

Owners are working harder than ever.

Teams are stretched. Margins are tightening.

And what used to feel “under control” is starting to feel… harder.

When you are deep in the trenches, managing day-to-day operations, responding to staff, dealing with suppliers, chasing sales, and navigating cashflow, something subtle happens.

You stop seeing the full picture.

And when that happens, issues don’t stabilise.

They compound.

Hard check: don’t ignore this

Be honest:

• What are you avoiding right now?

• Where are you losing money that you haven’t properly investigated?

• Who in your business are you trusting without oversight?

• What would break if you stepped away for 30 days?

• How long have you known something isn’t right — and done nothing?

• Are you leading… or just reacting?

If this made you uncomfortable, that’s the point.

Most businesses don’t fail overnight.

They drift. They ignore. They delay.

What we are seeing across businesses right now

In the past quarter alone, we have worked with business owners experiencing:

• Employee theft or financial irregularities that went undetected for months;

• Declining productivity with no clear accountability framework;

• Sales pipelines slowing, with no structured recovery strategy;

• Burnout at owner and leadership level impacting decision quality;

• Cashflow pressure being managed week-to-week with no forward planning;

• Over-reliance on one or two key clients;

• No succession depth or contingency plan if something shifts;

• Governance existing in name, but not in behaviour.

Individually, each of these looks manageable. Collectively, they create instability. And the risk is not just financial.

It is operational. It is cultural. It is reputational.

The cost of not stepping back

We often hear: “We’ll deal with that next quarter.”

“It’s not that bad yet.” “We just need a bit more time.”

But what we consistently see is this:

By the time something is obvious, it has already been developing for months, sometimes years.

The cost of inaction shows up as:

Eroded margins | Increased stress | Poorer decisions

Weakened team performance | Theft | Reduced business value | Dissatisfied customers and in some cases, significant financial loss.

Take action before something forces you to
